Vulkan VkResult Codes
Return codes produced by the Vulkan graphics and compute API, encoded in the VkResult enumeration. A non-negative value reports success or a qualified success condition; a negative value reports that a command failed and was not completed.

- VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST Device Lost The logical or physical device has been lost, usually after a GPU crash, hang (TDR), or driver reset. The VkDevice and every object created from it become unusable and must be recreated.
- VK_ERROR_EXTENSION_NOT_PRESENT Extension Not Present A requested instance or device extension is not supported by the implementation. Check vkEnumerateInstanceExtensionProperties or vkEnumerateDeviceExtensionProperties before requesting it.
- VK_ERROR_FEATURE_NOT_PRESENT Feature Not Present A requested feature in VkPhysicalDeviceFeatures is not supported by the physical device. Query supported features with vkGetPhysicalDeviceFeatures before enabling them at device creation.
- VK_ERROR_FORMAT_NOT_SUPPORTED Format Not Supported A requested image, buffer, or surface format is not supported for the intended usage on this implementation.
- VK_ERROR_FRAGMENTATION Fragmentation Creation of a descriptor pool or memory allocation failed due to fragmentation of the underlying pool or heap.
- VK_ERROR_FRAGMENTED_POOL Fragmented Pool A pool allocation, such as from a descriptor pool, has failed because the pool's memory has become fragmented from prior allocations and frees, even though no single host or device allocation failed.
- VK_ERROR_FULL_SCREEN_EXCLUSIVE_MODE_LOST_EXT Full-Screen Exclusive Mode Lost An operation on the swapchain failed because the application no longer has exclusive full-screen access, usually because the OS or user switched away from the fullscreen window (e.g. alt-tab).
- VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DISPLAY_KHR Incompatible Display The display used to create a shared swapchain is not compatible with it, for example because the two swapchains were created for different displays or display modes.
- VK_ERROR_INCOMPATIBLE_DRIVER Incompatible Driver A driver incompatibility was detected during vkCreateInstance or vkCreateDevice, typically because the requested Vulkan API version exceeds what the installed driver supports.
- VK_ERROR_INITIALIZATION_FAILED Initialization Failed Initialization of an object could not be completed for implementation-specific reasons. Commonly returned by vkCreateInstance or vkCreateDevice when driver setup fails.
- VK_ERROR_INVALID_EXTERNAL_HANDLE Invalid External Handle An external handle, such as a shared memory, semaphore, or fence handle imported from another API or process, is not a valid handle of the specified type.
- VK_ERROR_INVALID_OPAQUE_CAPTURE_ADDRESS Invalid Opaque Capture Address Creation of a buffer or memory allocation failed because the requested opaque capture address could not be reused, typically when replaying a captured GPU trace.
- VK_ERROR_LAYER_NOT_PRESENT Layer Not Present A requested validation or implicit layer is not present on the system or could not be loaded, usually because the Vulkan SDK or a specific layer package is not installed.
- VK_ERROR_MEMORY_MAP_FAILED Memory Map Failed Mapping of a memory object with vkMapMemory has failed.
- VK_ERROR_NATIVE_WINDOW_IN_USE_KHR Native Window In Use The native window underlying a VkSurfaceKHR is already in use by another API, or by another Vulkan swapchain, in a way that prevents creating a new swapchain for it.
- VK_ERROR_NOT_PERMITTED Not Permitted The driver denied a request, such as an elevated queue priority, because the calling process lacks sufficient privileges.
- VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_DATE_KHR Swapchain Out of Date The surface has changed in a way that makes the swapchain incompatible with it, most commonly a window resize. The swapchain must be recreated before further presentation, and the frame that returned this error is usually discarded.
- VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_DEVICE_MEMORY Out of Device Memory A device (GPU) memory allocation required by the command has failed, typically because the GPU's video memory heap is exhausted.
- VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_HOST_MEMORY Out of Host Memory A host (CPU-side) memory allocation required by the command has failed.
- VK_ERROR_OUT_OF_POOL_MEMORY Out of Pool Memory A descriptor pool allocation has failed because the pool is out of space. Unlike VK_ERROR_FRAGMENTED_POOL, this can also be returned when the underlying host or device allocation itself failed. Introduced by VK_KHR_maintenance1 and promoted to Vulkan 1.1 core.
- VK_ERROR_SURFACE_LOST_KHR Surface Lost The VkSurfaceKHR is no longer available, for example because the underlying window was closed or the display was disconnected. The surface and any swapchain built on it must be destroyed and recreated.
- VK_ERROR_TOO_MANY_OBJECTS Too Many Objects Too many objects of a given type have already been created for this device, exceeding an implementation-defined limit.
- VK_ERROR_UNKNOWN Unknown Error An unknown error has occurred. Either the application supplied invalid input, or an implementation failure occurred that isn't covered by another documented error code.
- VK_ERROR_VALIDATION_FAILED Validation Failed The validation layers detected invalid API usage in the call. Returned when validation is configured to fail calls rather than only report them through a debug callback.
- VK_EVENT_RESET Event Reset The queried VkEvent is currently in the unsignaled state, returned by vkGetEventStatus.
- VK_EVENT_SET Event Set The queried VkEvent is currently in the signaled state, returned by vkGetEventStatus.
- VK_INCOMPLETE Incomplete A caller-provided array was too small to hold all the available results, for example when enumerating extensions, layers, or physical devices. Call again with a larger array to retrieve the rest.
- VK_NOT_READY Not Ready A fence or query has not yet completed. Returned by vkGetFenceStatus or vkGetQueryPoolResults when polling for a result instead of blocking on it.
- VK_PIPELINE_COMPILE_REQUIRED Pipeline Compile Required Pipeline creation would have required compilation, but the application set VK_PIPELINE_CREATE_FAIL_ON_PIPELINE_COMPILE_REQUIRED_BIT to skip it instead, for example to avoid stalling on an uncached shader variant.
- VK_SUBOPTIMAL_KHR Suboptimal Swapchain The swapchain no longer matches the surface properties exactly, for example after a window resize, but can still be used to present. Applications typically keep rendering and recreate the swapchain at a convenient point.
- VK_SUCCESS Success The command completed successfully with no special condition to report. This is the return value of the overwhelming majority of successful Vulkan API calls.
- VK_TIMEOUT Timeout A wait operation, such as vkWaitForFences or vkAcquireNextImageKHR, did not complete within the specified timeout.
